Whenever I call MIL, kalo Lil Adam nak menyibuk sembang jugak... dia meraban la cakap macam-macam.
Lama-lama aku realize, Lil Adam managed to catch up many BM vocabs yang aku tak pernah ajar langsung.
So, the next time aku call MIL, aku cakap "Mak jangan risau la. Anak saya tu Melayu. Tak diajar pun, lidah dia lidah Melayu jugak. Nanti reti la dia cakap benda yang saya tak ajar pun..."
Being particular in English (grammar, especially), aku risau sangat kalo esok-esok anak aku punya English tak bagus. Mine is not perfect either, tapi aku tak suka simple English errors.
Aritu Zeta ada tanya tentang camna nak ajar anak-anak converse in English.
I might not be the perfect person to answer, tapi aku try la share apa yang praktikal.

Aku converse with Lil Adam mostly in English.
Kadang-kadang dia mix jugak.
e.g "Adam nak makan nasi and egg and soy sauce"
"Adam doe-wan sleep, Mama."
Biasanya aku tak marah kalo ayat tu ada grammatical errors, cuma aku repeat la siap dengan pembetulan.
e.g. Adam want to eat rice and egg and soy sauce?
e.g. Adam don't want to sleep? But Mama is soooo sleepy.
Lately, dia suka bertanya "Mama, what are u doing?"
So, bila aku usik dia..."Hehehe. Mama want to cut the 'bird"
Dia pun mengelak..."No, Mama tak cut bird, Mama cut onions, Adam cut the paper."
(sebab dia ingat pernah tengok aku potong bawang dan dia pernah gunting/tampal kertas untuk buat artwork dulu.
Aku admit, aku jenis yang malas nak bacakan buku (or bedtime stories) untuk anak. Kalo korang rajin, bagus la.
But don't stick to the words in the books. Create je ayat sendiri. Budak-budak bukan penyabar nak tunggu kita abis page-by-page.
But make an effort untuk duduk sebelah anak sambil explain/ulang apa yang disebut kat TV tu. Kalo biar dia hadap sorang-sorang, maybe lambat sikit la dia pick up, atau maybe dia tersalah dengar.
e.g. Bila kitorang tengok Dora, mulut aku pun macam mak nenek... siap giggles dan facial expression (sila bayangkan aku buat muka monster nak kejar Lil Adam).
Yes, teaching children English can be intimidating. Tapi jangan risau la... Kita redah jer.
p/s:
Lil Adam dah hafal lagu ABC, cuma nak make sure dia identify huruf-huruf tu jer...
kat umah sofia pun converse english ngan anak. bapaknya malay. kat school mix ikut cikgu. since seminggu 5 ari dgn ibu, 2 ari baru ngan abah, at first mmg dia paham english je. kalau abah ckp ibu kena translate. hehe. tp sbb dah lidah melayu kan, skang dia paham dua2 la.
ReplyDeletesofia tgh carik tips utk ABC jugak. skang ni dia baru nk pandai nyanyi lagu ABC tu. bila bukak flash card, awal2 dia tolong simpan kan. hahahaha.. tp dia minat nk mengeja sbb rajin tgk wordworld tu. camne tuh? =)
ReplyDeletenanti jgn lupa join contest belog aku yer

Budak2 senang belajar dgn lagu... bukan budak2 je.. adult pun senang ingat anything yg dinyanyikan or ditambah muzik.. download je zaman skang ni.. mcm2 ada kt internet ni.. my project Skang ni tgh try nak cari doa2 harian dlm bentuk lagu yg budak2 nyanyi... one more things kids will be interested if they see or hear other kids singing... dia akan rasa seronok.. so pilih lagu2 yg budak2 nyanyi.. org tua nyanyi kureng sket...
ReplyDeleteme pun sama....dia dah boleh ikut nyanyi ABC tu..tp sampai G dia dah berterabur masuk RST U laa dsb....hahha!
ReplyDeletetp bila tjuk kat paper, kat baju ke dsb...she managed to identify which is, which B etc! amazing kan??! x tau camna dia belajar....hahaha.

ReplyDeletebelle,
ReplyDeletepas nie klu dpt jumpa lil adam, aku kene berabuk ckp omputih lah ek.. aduh..dah lah aku tak pandai cakap omputih kan

ReplyDeletemy mom taught me using flash cards...and yup, daily conversation in english is crucial..just use simple english with simple grammar for these you kids to digest easily...

You're right. Teaching any language, in fact shouldn't be so boring. Make sure there's a variety of reading, conversing, watching. listening and the most important thing is practicing all the time. Kids under the age of 6 are able to master as many languages as possible because their brains are like sponges during these age.
ReplyDeletebelikan cd jer bnyk2.. hehehe
ReplyDeleteexposure to english (reading & listening especially) amat penting dari kecik supaya besar2 esok tak menyusahkan cikgu haha boleh?
ReplyDeletepengalaman i menunjukkan pelajar lemah sebab kurang vocab - tu yang masalah when it comes to explaining things to them, kena guna bm.. apa orang kata, ajar english guna bm *terpaksa*
so just keep up what you're doing for now.. (i have this one theory about english that i think works i.e. learning through nurturing)
kalo korg mmg dah nak fly, i really wouldnt worry bcoz kalo x diajar english pon, they will pick it up in an instant, siap local accent lg. aisyah skang mmg ckp english aje, habis intimated nenek dia nak chatting via vid conference, tp BM tu dia paham la, cuma kalo menyebut bunyi mat salleh hahaha..
ReplyDeletepsl rajin/ x rajin ajar tu, i think anak2 x perlu ajar secara formal, but parents kena ckp english la ngan anak2 as much as they can, preferably ajar yg betul terus bkn manglish bcoz lps tu mcm susah dah nak betulkan kat budak2 kalo diorg dah ingat yg tu betul. so maybe parents pon kena wat homework sama la kot. i think yg sesetgh parent dah buat mcm ngan ibu ckp BI ngan ayah ckp BM tu bagus jg, in our household it works.
psl ABC plak, aisyah dah hafal alphabets and dah kenal most letters and i have youtube to thank kih kih. but malam2 sblm tido baca buku mesti wajib bersama2sbb aisyah mmg insists, but that's just us la, whatever works :)
belle..thank you for sharing.. :)
ReplyDeleteeasiest way to recognize ABC is to read/sing-a-long and show a visual. Kena la jugak ada visual. Book with a simple picture relating to the alphabet works best as they can relate to it. If plain ABC je, dia tak interested. So far this works best for Asrul. Dah bleh recognise dah.
ReplyDeleteyeah I believe Asrul's Malay vocab pun picked up at the nursery..
suka entri ini. terima kasih kerana berkongsi.
ReplyDeleteABC eh...mcm aku la kat.. kasi apple kat dia aku toreh apple tu huruf A..
ReplyDeletekalo suruh amik towel aku buat mcm ultraman (atau mcm bodoh buat mcm ultraman-walo patut buat mcm time-out sign)
Anis go get your towel.. T for towel...
tak payah tunjuk sangat flash card.. sb kat sekolah dia akan relate apa yg dia dengar dari kita..
Aku tak tau laa skang kita mcm cuba suruh anak kita belajar secara formal --flash card) padahal aku lebih suka belajar secara informal mana dia boleh relate sendiri apa yg dia nampak dengar, time kat playschool
aah nie me setuju bila baca story time tido.mmg kene guna own words.dia cepat busan..cite jerlah pape yang sama ngan pic
